I organized a line-up of a few local musicians which was held on stage at the Maple Leaf Theatre. It's hard to believe that the last time I had performed was at an Open Mic in January 2020, as I used to host these on a regular basis. I suppose that would explain why I was so nervous on Saturday! Nervous but also excited to be able to bring people together with live music.

Thanks to Tourism Saskatchewan that shared this photo on their social media a couple of years ago, this photo reached thousands of people. There were countless comments and stories from people's past of the days when they would visit this flour mill or one just like it. Construction was completed in 1907, making it the oldest and most complete flour mill of heavy post and beam construction remaining in Saskatchewan. Like other mills of the period, wheat delivered here by local farmers would be processed into flour, bran and other products. The flour mill contains original turn-of-the-century milling equipment including grinders, sifter, bucket elevators and bagging machines, and is is attached to an elevator for storing grain. The grain elevator is of wood crib construction and has a sloped shoulder roofline. The Esterhazy flour mill stands as a reminder of the importance of flour mills in the development of Saskatchewan Grain Industry. Designated as a provincial heritage property in 2005, it also joined the family of national historic sites in 2007 with its designation as a National Historic Site of Canada.

One of my Instagram followers commented: "I remember riding around the flour mill on my bike with a banana seat as a kid. Can't believe it's still there. What a beautiful photo." I am grateful to have such a historic building in my hometown of Esterhazy and blessed to have this capture of it framed by the beauty of winter.
Katie Millertag:katiemiller.ca,2005:Post/59705962019-11-23T11:42:19-06:002022-02-19T20:00:33-06:00Peace, Love & Music at Woodstock Tribute Concert
I had a grooooovy time channeling Janis Joplin to kick off the Woodstock Generation Tribute Concert at the Maple Leaf Theatre in Esterhazy. It's quite heart-warming to hear comments from people at our shows on how much they love our harmonies. I've been super proud of Skye's progress on the guitar, and now we're able to have two guitars on a few songs, which I know we'll keep building on. Alice sent me a photo along with her message: "Katie, everyone loved them! Seeing a group of men being tickled pink was the Best thing I have ever seen! They loved them! I’m so glad we connected so happy with the choices. You keep on taking those pictures!"

Greg’s vision was to showcase the work of photographers that have taken one of his camera workshops, with the stipulation that all photos submitted must be shot in Canada. Over 6000 images were submitted for this 240 page book, and I am blessed to be have three of my photos featured. I’ve always loved photography, but after experiencing one of Greg’s workshops a couple of years ago, I became seriously passionate in pursuing photography with the gained knowledge of how a camera works, seeking inspiration from my connection with nature and continuing to shoot beloved photos of my family, especially in the summer at Sandy Lake. Congratulations to all of the talented photographers that made the book and a huge pat on the back to Greg Johnson for undertaking this enormous project and very treasured keepsake. At times, it's music, songwriting and performing, and at other times of more recent, it's when I have my camera with me that I feel the most connected to that divine spirit that resides within me. To quote John Muir, "In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks," which seems to ring true for me whether I'm walking on my valley hikes in my neck of the woods by Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, or driving on the surrounding gravel roads chasing down sunrises, sunsets and northern lights. These walks and drives with my camera all bring me a serenity and peace and show me the awesomeness of being present and living in the moment.

I have recently created my own Facebook Page dedicated to my photography which you can check out here. I have begun to update my website from strictly a musician site to include my photography, as photography has increasingly become a vital avenue for me for my artistic expression. While I continue to perform and write, as most people know me first and foremost as a singersongwriter, Katie Miller the Photographer has become an important part of who I am.

I was super excited to sell my first print earlier this year at the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery's annual Landscape & Memory exhibition, where I had four works displayed. I had these particular photos printed on brushed aluminum and I was very pleased with how the metal captured the brilliance of the colours, which shimmer and change depending on your viewpoint.

Please check out my Instagram which I use frequently for posting my photography. Instagram is a great forum for sharing my photography and for connecting with other photographers, and I will now be showcasing many of these photos on my new photography page and website. These photos are all available for purchase in various sizes and mediums including metal, canvas, photoboard and framed. While Landscape Photography is my first love, I have done some portrait sessions and have included some of these portrait photos on my website and Facebook page. For photo inquiries, please email me via my website or message me via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
Katie Millertag:katiemiller.ca,2005:Post/46134812017-03-02T10:57:10-06:002022-02-19T20:10:48-06:00Semi-Finalist in the 2016 International Songwriting Competition
I am honoured to have my song, This December (from album, A New Day) as a semi-finalist in the 2016 International Songwriting Competition, which received more than 16 000 entries with semi-finalists making up 10% of all entries. We have a new space in our town, Whippletree Coffee located in the recently renovated Maple Leaf Theatre, which has provided a much-needed venue for bringing people together for the love of music. The atmosphere is cozy and the coffee and treats are great, and the local performers that come out really look forward to this event. The Open Mic nights have become a once a month happening, bringing in new faces each time in a collective gathering of sharing musical talents from all ages and genres. This event has also proven to be a great way for me to bring an awareness to the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, that I passionately believe in, with donations collected by passing a hat. I thank everyone for being so graciously generous in their donations, with hundreds of dollars being raised at each event in our cozy little venue, towards this much needed fund for the healing and recovery of the Indigenous people of our country.

Katie Millertag:katiemiller.ca,2005:Post/44287292016-10-20T11:59:37-06:002022-02-19T20:09:52-06:00Open Mic Fundraiser for Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund ~ October 20, 2016
I have always been a fan of the iconic Canadian band, The Tragically Hip, and revered the poetic lyrics by Gord Downie. After the news of Gord’s terminal cancer, there was no doubt in my mind that I would be going to see them live in concert, one more time; and I was extremely fortunate to have been in the front row at one of their concerts this past summer. I watched Gord Downie perform with such an amazing commitment to his art-form and audience, and I held it together until near the end of the concert when I heard the first couple of bars of “Ahead By A Century."

That night, my respect for Gord Downie amplified, and continues to grow as Gord releases Secret Path: a 10 song album and graphic novel illustrated by Jeff Lemire, that tells the story of Chanie Wenjack, a twelve-year-old boy who died trying to escape the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in 1966, walking the railroad tracks to return to his home, 400 miles away. Proceeds from the sales of the Secret Path album and novel will be donated to The Gord Downie Secret Path Fund for Truth and Reconciliation via The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at The University of Manitoba. The animated film adaptation of The Secret Path will be broadcast by CBC Sunday, Oct 23 at 9pm and you’ll also be able to view it online at www.cbc.ca/secretpath.

Tonight, as I host this Open Mic event in my hometown of Esterhazy, I will be passing around "The Hat," to collect donations for the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, a newly fund created by The Downie and Wenjack families that will support the healing and recovery of the First Peoples of our country, and foster new relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. My hope is for this event to continue on a monthly basis, bringing out all the local musicians and music lovers, while also working towards raising awareness and funds for such an extremely important issue in our country. Much thanks to Gord Downie and the Downie and Wenjack families, for creating this much needed fund to help heal our people.
Katie Millertag:katiemiller.ca,2005:Post/41051432016-03-25T09:40:54-06:002017-01-12T08:24:08-06:00A New Day, A New Album, A New ApproachI'm excited to announce that my new album, A New Day, is finally released today!!! I am so proud of the final product and have to thank Jared Robinson (Nebulus Entertainment in Moose Jaw, SK) for his great work on the album art and finesse with the production of this album. Jared is one talented guy: music producer, photographer, graphic designer, and not to mention all the instruments he can play! I am so appreciative first most, that Jared understood my vision for this album in capturing a stripped down sound and believing in "less is more." The songs that made this album are more honest and personal than ever before, and I've decided that since music has helped me with my own personal demons, I wanted to help make a difference with this album. So I've decided to make A New Day a platform for mental health awareness with half of the album sales being donated to the Canadian Mental Health Association (Saskatchewan Division). If I can reach out to people through my music in making them feel less alone in their struggles through life, then I will feel like I've really accomplished something.
Katie Millertag:katiemiller.ca,2005:Post/40781332016-03-08T12:01:17-06:002016-08-11T01:07:58-06:00What You SeeThank you CBC Saskatchewan Morning Edition for spinning the first release, "What You See," March 7, 2016 from my upcoming album, A New Day (Release date: March 25, 2016). The response on social media has been great: Thanks everyone! Songwriting is a very personal, cathartic experience for me, and I write my music to express myself, first and foremost. The songwriting process is something that I truly enjoy and when I arrive at the completion of a song, it is ultimately rewarding. Response to my music from others, is icing on the cake and is something I am truly grateful for. I also want to thank QCIndie.com, Regina's Alternative Radio station, for their shout-out of my music: "Last year local artist Katie Miller sent us her music and we instantly fell in love. We're now excited to have her latest single, 'What You See,' in regular rotation." I am an optimist and I believe in humankind: humans are kind. With all the talk on social media these past few months about the world in such critical condition, my thoughts formed around the penning of a new song, entitled, "This December." I attribute John Lennon's "Imagine" as a source for inspiration for this song, as it's a song I have always related to with my own personal thoughts about our world. I performed "This December" for the first time at my hometown's annual community carol festival and then the following week on CTV Regina Morning Live (click to view). I headed to the studio straight from CTV to Nebulus Entertainment in Moose Jaw to record it as I decided to include it on my next album. Another new idea for this album was my decision to add mandolin to some of the tracks, which all came about after meeting up with fellow Saskatchewan musician, Thomas Roussin (most know him from his project, "The Grain Report"), at a local jam night a couple months ago. I absolutely love his mandolin playing and am excited to have him join me for some future live shows:)

Katie Millertag:katiemiller.ca,2005:Post/38825352015-10-04T21:46:21-06:002022-02-19T20:14:13-06:00Autumn Recording Sessions
It has been a busy fall preparing for the recording of my second album, and and now that I've spent some time in the studio, I'm happy to say that the recording process has been going smooth like the lake at sunset thanks to Jared Robinson at Nebulus Entertainment in Moose Jaw. Jared has been great to work with and he really gets my vision of the sonic quality I want this album to have, which is a sound comparable to my live shows with my trio. I'm very excited to have bandmates, Kathy Travis and Shaun Bleich, playing on this album, and know they will have a great experience this week in the studio!
Katie Millertag:katiemiller.ca,2005:Post/38343072015-08-28T22:34:32-06:002022-02-19T20:13:53-06:00Sandy Lake, Steve Earle and Dave the Bartender
I had way too much fun at my last Manitoba summer show at the Sandy Lake Hotel. Who doesn't love a great crowd and impromptu performances by random musicians who just so happen to be there? It's always those unplanned moments that are the most memorable. We were all treated to some mean Steve Earle covers by Riley Kling from Birtle, Manitoba, whom I met for the first time that night. Riley had come upon my music online and the next thing you know, he's at my show along with his guitar, signed by Steve Earle at the "Meet & Greet" before Steve Earle's concert a few days before in Russell, Manitoba, quietly asking if he could play a few songs in between my sets. Riley wowed us all and I look forward to having him perform with me again in the future. As the evening flowed, a couple of people put a bug in my ear that I should get Dave the bartender up to sing "House of the Rising Sun." Yep, I can play this one, but will Dave sing it? I've never heard Dave sing before, but neither had I heard Riley Kling either! There was no hesitation when asked, as Dave gave a nod and modestly stepped up to the mic, and belted it out while I hammered away on the guitar. It was icing on the cake at the end of the night: sweeeeet!
Katie Millertag:katiemiller.ca,2005:Post/37972912015-08-11T11:10:00-06:002022-02-19T20:13:16-06:00Manitoba Memories
I've been thoroughly enjoying my tour in Manitoba this summer and it's always fun playing at a new venue. My July started off at the classic "Wigwam" Restaurant at Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park. The Neighbourhood Bookstore & Cafe in Winnipeg was a cozy refuge on a rainy night where Oreo Cheesecake appeared to be the popular item of the night. Sam's Place in Winnipeg has the friendliest staff and I appreciated the applause from the kitchen. A highlight was playing at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival at "The Cube," in the Old Market Square, the core of Winnipeg's historic exchange district. I sat in awe the day before at the Fringe, taking in the set by "Slow Leaves," the recording name of Winnipeg's own Grant Davidson. Love his music! Farmhouse Bistro and Tavern was my next stop in Virden where I was treated like family. If you've never been there before, you are missing out on a fantastic venue just off the #1 Hwy: awesome food, farmhouse atmosphere & down-to-earth people! I'll be back at the Wigwam at Clear Lake in August and then will finish off at my favourite summer place, the Sandy Lake Hotel for their 14th Anniversary. Thanks Manitoba!
Katie Miller
